- STONE GARDENS BELLEVUE HOSTS THE U.S. PRO CLIMBING TOUR. THE FIRST UBC PRO TOUR EVENT IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST-
NORTHAMPTON, MA (Monday, May 21, 2012) – The Unified Bouldering Championships (UBC) Pro Tour today announces a new tour stop and pro climbing’s first-ever visit to the Pacific Northwest. Stone Gardens Bellevue, located in Washington state’s Seattle metro area, will host the Seattle Bouldering Challenge Pro (SBC Pro) on September 21st & 22nd, 2012. Top athletes will compete for a $17,000 cash purse, the largest cash purse ever on the UBC Pro Tour.
This marks the first time in nearly two years that UBC Pro Tour visits a climbing gym and Pro Tour Director Pete Ward is looking forward to the venue at Stone Gardens; “I’m very pleased to bring the UBC Pro Tour to the Pacific Northwest and especially to a facility of the quality that Stone Gardens represents. Stone Gardens Bellevue is a fantastic new venue with tremendous ownership & management and the SBC Pro will be a huge event, I can’t wait for September 21st.” Emphasizing the importance of building a nation-wide network of gyms that support pro climbing, Ward continues; “Climbing gyms represent the future of the sport and are the proving ground where the future stars of climbing are born. So coming to Stone Gardens to inspire new climbers and ensure the growth of climbing is really what it’s all about. Working with Stone Gardens to produce a UBC-level event will give local fans an opportunity to see elite level athletes competing up close and personal, which is tremendously exciting especially in a city as amazing as Seattle.”
Stone Garden’s SBC series is the region’s largest bouldering competition and brings with it a rich history and strong support within the local climbing community. Keith Magnuson, owner of Stone Gardens, reflects, “Sixteen years ago we held our first bouldering championship at our Seattle gym. We had less than 100 competitors but the climbing community loved it. Since then the comp has grown to over 250 competitors and the merchandise prizes have grown with it. Each event has raised money for The Access Fund which helps climbers keep existing access and gain new access to outdoor climbing areas.” Magnuson continues, “Over the years the climbing community has grown enormously and climbing is well on its way to becoming a mainstream sport. We are pleased to bring this professional event to the community to let them see world-class climbers in action. The UBC Pro Tour will bring excitement to the local climbing community and will get people buzzing about the scene.”
Registration for the SBC Pro will open in early August.
Stone Gardens provides the ultimate climbing experience to the Pacific Northwest climbing community, offering quality training and recreational facilities to the region for over 17 years.
